Pediatric Massage

Pediatric massage describes massage for any child under the age of 18. Children have different emotional, physical, and developmental needs than adults. Pediatric massage is designed to address these needs during a safe and effective massage session.

Massage can be used to help with specific medical conditions or for general well-being.
I will ask for your child's health history and communicate with your child's health care provider, when necessary, to develop an effective plan for their massage sessions. It is important to me to have a collaborative relationship with everyone involved with your child's health care. This allows me to assure their sessions support other treatments they might be receiving. Pediatric massage is an evidence-informed therapy that can complement the medical care and therapies already being provided.

I have completed additional training to be able to provide massage to children. I make it a point to meet them at their level and let them know they have control over their sessions. Every child is unique and special, requiring their own individualized massage session. I will work closely with you, your child, and health care team to create personalized sessions every time. I will also demonstrate techniques to you that you can provide to your child.

Examples of when kids could benefit from a massage

  • Muscle aches or pains
  • Anxiety
  • Headaches
  • Complex medical conditions and Disabilities
  • Autism and Sensory Processing Disorders

  • Athletes
  • Sleep issues
  • Gastrointestinal issues
  • Muscle tone issues (decreased or increased)
  • Joint issues (decreased or increased range of motion)

What to expect

I may not perform massage with your child the first session. I like to make sure we take the time to establish trust, communication, and rapport. I may demonstrate massage on you, the parent, so your child can observe someone receiving massage. This can also give you the opportunity to experience the techniques, see how they feel and give you more confidence when performing the techniques yourself. Massages are usually performed with your child sitting or laying on the floor. They remain dressed for the session and a parent is present for the full session.
